KAWS – Just kidding?
At 40, mainstream urban artist Brian Donnelly, aka Kaws, is a walking contradiction. Born in New Jersey, based in Brooklyn, this art school grad with roots in graff, displays the stern demeanor of an angry young man never having seen the ocean, yet chills out in St Barth’s. Hence the cheeky chic title of his show at the Eden Rock Hotel, a super-iconic haven for the mega rich.
PERMANENT HOLIDAY is also the title of the star work: a logo-like dolphin, painted in neo-pop kitschy-constructivist mode, exhibited alongside MAN’S BEST FRIEND, a brand-new series of black and white paintings, zeroing in on details from the Peanuts comic strip. Although Charles M. Schulz’s characters are blown up to the point where they become barely recognizable, KAWS leaves a few visual clues in each work.
LATIN LOVERRR…warms to this heady mix of kid’s stuff and ‘brainfucking’ conceptual allusions, designed to demonstrate “the power of repetition in enabling images to enter our cultural memory”
